May 24, 2023

Dear Friends,

In case you missed it, CDA, Alianzas Americas, the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies (CGRS), Women’s Refugee Commission (WRC), Latin America Working Group (LAWG), International Rescue Committee (IRC), and Instituto para las Mujeres en la Migración (IMUMI) hosted two virtual conversations discussing U.S. asylum policies. In the first conversation, “Policies that Replace Title 42,” we discussed the U.S. policies being implemented following the end of Title 42, such as prohibitions on asylum through transit bans, pathways, and CBP One. Watch the recording here. The second conversation, “Far from Safety,” discussed the report Far From Safety: Dangers and Limits to Protection for Asylum Seekers Transiting Through Latin America, which challenges the U.S. asylum ineligibility rule for individuals who have not sought protection in another country along the migratory route following the end of Title 42. Stay tuned for a recording of “Far from Safety” and for upcoming conversations.

U.S.-Cuba News Brief: 05/09/2023

May 9, 2023

Dear Friends,

Last week, Representative Jim McGovern (MA-02) and former Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy published an op-ed in the Boston Globe calling on the Biden-Harris administration to remove Cuba from the State Sponsors of Terrorism (SSOT) List. Reflecting on the island’s current humanitarian crisis, Rep. McGovern and Sen. Leahy condemn “the repressive policies of the Cuban government that have caused so much hardship on the island” before noting that “an honest assessment requires an acknowledgement of the ways that America’s sanctions are compounding the suffering of Cuban families.” CDA joins their call for greater engagement with Cuba in order to address humanitarian and national security issues and respond to the recent influx of Cuban migration, as well as better represent the will and needs of the people of both the United States and Cuba. As the experienced members of Congress state, “Engagement, based on our national interests and values, and the need to help the Cuban people at this critical time, is the only effective option, and the only option worthy of the United States.” Read the op-ed here. To learn more about the SSOT and its implications for the Cuban people, read CDA’s FAQ on the SSOT here.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), who recently updated the landmark 2014 Memorandum of Understanding with the Cuban Academy of Sciences (ACC) to advance scientific cooperation between U.S. and Cuban scientists, published a reflection on the renewal process and their recent efforts to continue advancing scientific collaboration between the US and Cuba. Read the reflection here.
