U.S.-Cuba News Brief 04/22/2022

Dear Friends,

This Thursday U.S. and Cuban officials met in Washington for a bilateral migration dialogue. CDA encourages the Biden-Harris administration to continue engaging on issues of mutual concern in order to advance U.S. interests, avoid future humanitarian and migratory crises, mitigate strain on resources along the migratory route, and reduce further suffering on the part of the Cuban people. Yesterday, Cuba reported 282 COVID-19 cases. There are currently 1,345 total active cases of COVID-19 on the island. The total number of cases since March of 2020 is 1,101,220 and the total number of deaths since March of 2020 is 8,523. Approximately 89.7 percent of the population is fully vaccinated (not including the booster). For a graph of case numbers since March 2020, see here. U.S.-Cuba News Brief: 04/15/2022

Dear Friends,

For those of you in D.C., be sure to register for Cuban artist and costume designer, Celia Ledón’s presentation and discussion of her sustainable fashion designs, “Sustainable Fashion—Art as a Path to Creating Change” including a live demonstration of her techniques, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on April 21 at 6:30PM EST! We had the honor of hosting Ms. Ledón in D.C. in 2019 as part of a delegation for independent Cuban fashion brand Clandestina. Ms. Ledón, whose work has been exhibited and recognized internationally, shared her experiences as a woman entrepreneur in Cuba and her work in costume design for dance, theater, and other productions. We are excited to welcome her to D.C!

The total number of cases since March of 2020 is 1,099,042 and the total number of deaths since March of 2020 is 8,519. Interested in advocating for positive U.S. engagement in the Americas? CDA might be the place for you! We are seeking a 2022 Fellow!

CDA’s Stephen M. Rivers Memorial Fellowship is a year-long, full-time, paid position running from May 2022-May 2023. We are looking for qualified recent graduates or master’s students with a special interest in all things Cuba, a thirst for activism, and an interest in pursuing a professional career in the foreign policy NGO community.
